What to Expect:
Where should I park?
When arriving at First UMC there are parking lots on both sides of our facility. There are spots that are designated for Visitors near the entrance to each lot off of N. Von Minden. Once you park, there will be a greeter waiting to welcome you in the parking lot and they can answer questions and direct you in the right way.
What are the worship services like?
Our 9:00 am Traditional Sunday morning worship usually begins with a welcome from the pastor and some announcements. After greeting one another, we move into a time of music, prayer, and scripture, followed by a sermon. We then share communion before singing a final song and receiving a blessing. After the service, we gather in the Fellowship Hall for light refreshments. A normal Sunday service usually lasts about an hour.
Our 11:10 New Life service is our contemporary service and is similar to the flow of the traditional service. The big differences are a band, video projection screens with song lyrics and occasional videos, and a more laid back approach to worship. After worship, you are invited to stay for fellowship and meet new people.
Our 6:00 pm Wednesday Midweek service offers an atmosphere of fellowship, uplifting music, thought-provoking messages and an opportunity to celebrate Holy Communion. It is “come as you are,” and we will always finish before 7:00 pm.
May I take communion?
The table is open. All who believe that Jesus is present in the bread and wine are invited to commune. Children are welcome to commune as well. We are available to explore the meaning of communion with you and your children but all are welcome at our table. Grape juice is used for communion and there is also a gluten-free bread option.
What about my children?
We encourage families to worship together. If your little one cries out or makes a little noise, that’s just fine. It is good for our whole community to worship God together. If your child needs some time away, feel free to head into the narthex (lobby outside the sanctuary) where you and your child will have more room to get wiggles out. You can still hear and see the worship service in the narthex area. We also have “Kiddie Packs” on stands outside of both worship entrances. These packs are helpful for little ones who need something to keep them busy. They include many quiet toys, pipe cleaners for bending, small stuffed animals crayons and much more. These can be returned to the same stand and will be refilled for the next week. There is also an attended Nursery available during both Sunday Morning services.
How should I dress?
You will find that the community of First United Methodist Church is comfortable dressing in many different ways. You will find some people dressed in their Sunday best and others in jeans and T-shirts and everything in between. We welcome you to dress however you feel most comfortable.
